Hernando de Soto
With a group of fifty men, he discovered an Inca road to Cuzco, the capital of the Inca Empire, and became the first European to talk to the Sapa Inca Atahualpa when he preceded Pizarro to Cajamarca on their invasion march.

Good question... Who was it. I don't know. I think that Europeans and all other people found the Americas throughout the years. Long before any conquerors found the place were those few who for some reason or other, running away from slavery or forced labor or wars or whatever, got lost at sea and never made it back to Europe or Asia. They survived and became absorbed by some culture and maybe there was an impression made that survived and maybe not.

You mean Pizarro wasn't the first? News to me - do tell more.

[ADDED] Thanks for the note you sent me. I'm gonna guess Balboa.
