I can never get my towels fluffy-do you have to have a tumble drier to make them soft?

This is my wash routine-I wash them with other items in a 40 degree wash with washing liquid like Persil and use fabric conditioner for the final rinse.

In summer I dry them outside on the line and in winter on an indoor airer or for quickness, on the radiator which makes them even worse! (But stops them smelling which they do if they dry too slowly!)

They are so rough, you can almost exfoliate with them!

Oh, the burdens of a housewife! Help!

do not use fabric conditioner when washing towels as this somehow prevents towels from absorbing water from your skin and towel ends up sliding down your body without drying you. if drying on radiators do not just leave them, turn and fold them until dry then remove without leaving to dry longer than necessary as that gives the sandpaper finish. same applies when drying in sun, dont leave to bake, just to dry.

Try doing a towel only wash on 60°C cos that's what they should really be washed on then they shouldn't smell so much at least! This may help with the softness cos then all the fabric conditioner will be used JUST for the towels - ie they don't have to share it with the other clothes so they get more of it.... know what I mean? =/ Not sure if it will work but it def won't work in just one wash - give it time and good luck! I'm having the same prob!

I have noticed that fabric softener doesnt always soften the fabric. The best thing to do in the wash is on the final rinse add 1/4 cup of white vinegar. It is best to tumble dry the towels. Dry them thoroughly on a high heat, clean out the vent trap and then run them through the dryer once more on a lower heat setting.

Sounds silly but do not use fabric softener on your towels. Give them all a hot wash with no soap to get the residue soap etc out then line or tumble dry. Wash balls in the tumble dryer fluff them up really well. It is also a good idea to buy good quality towels I have Christy ones which have lasted for years.
Why not treat yourself to some luxury ones in the sales.

I bought 10 hand towels and 4 bath towels all the same make and all 650 weight. They cost me £154 at a sale in M&S 2 months ago.....They were lovely and soft and fluffy but after just one wash I could feel that they were going hard already...They have now been washed at 40c at least 8 times and they are now like sand paper....I have a water softener machine that has been serviced whenever it should be so why are my towels so rough ?

Having a tumble dryer really helps. if you haven't got one try a friends or go to launderette. See if this helps most of the answers you have got is right, But please don't put your towels to steep in fabric conditioner it says on all the packets not too. My friend done that years ago to her son's terry Nappie's and they turned blue and she couldn't get the colour out of them. I also have tried drying mine on the line, and i have to use the tumble dryer to get them soft. If the tumble dryer method doesn't work i guess you need new towels. You can buy good towels at a cheap price that are soft at Primark Store or buy in a bale at www.Argos.co.uk.

If you rinse too much the fabric conditioner washes out again. It is only protein. Tumble drier, low temp, normal rinse, concentrated fabric conditioner and a clean tennis shoe as they dry.

you need to invest in a tumble dryer. In the summer dry them on the line and then finish them off in the dryer. In the winter just put them staight in the dryer. That is the only way to make them fluffy again.Even the cheapest of towels will become fluffy with a dryer.

well your doing all the right things , maybe you are over drying them, by putting them on the radiators, if you don´t have a tumble drier, when they are almost dry iron them then put them in the airing cupboard it could also be that in your area there is a lot of lime in the water

The only thing I would suggest is to buy better ones next time. There is such a difference in cheap towels and more expensive ones but if you want fluffy, your going to have to spend a little more $
