Big Brother was based on George Orwell's 1949 novel,1984. Orwell warns of the terrifying dangers that man may create for himself in his quest for a utopian society. It warns that people might believe that everyone must become slaves to the government in order to have an orderly society, but at the expense of the freedom of the people. It birthed the saying "Big Brother is watching you".

Big Brother is a popular reality television format, where, over 15 weeks or so, a number of contestants (typically 12) try to avoid periodic publicly-voted evictions from a communal house and hence win a cash prize. The Big Brother show, a kind of 'real life soap', was invented by John de Mol of the Netherlands and developed by his production company, Endemol.
