The hold mode is basically for two things, for when you are listening music and you don't want the track changes accidentally or volume changes, and for when you turned "off" for the ipod not to turn on aaccidentally, case not necessarily warranties it doesn't turn on.

Hold is to keep buttons from getting pushed when you don't want them to, like when you put it in a pocket or purse.

Hold is mainly for storage and people who walk or run with it in their pockets. It is to prevent track and volume changes, and to keep it off. I personnally do not use it that much, but you can use it if you want - it doesn't make much of a difference.

If you're using it, it's so that the volume won't change. If you're not using it, it's so that it won't accidentally turn on while it's in your purse.
