Back in the dark ages, before they had running water, the woman would fill up the washtub and then the entire family would bathe, starting with the dad, then the mom, then oldest to youngest kids, ending with the baby. By this time, of course, the water was so filthy that it would have been hard to see the baby in the tub anymore. So, when they were getting ready to empty out the washtub, they would have to double check to make sure they weren't tossing out the baby too. Hence, the saying...Now we say it to mean we don't want to overdo something or we'll end up doing damage instead of a precise job.

back in the 1700's people didnt drain the water used for baths between each person and the families took baths in the order of Father, Mother, oldest sibling, younger siblings (the siblings went in order of age, oldest to youngest). often when the baby took the bath the water was extremely dirty and a lot of the time the family would forget that the baby was still in the bath when they went to throw out the bathwater.

In the 1500's when it was a privilege to bath the men took their baths first and then it went to the women and then the children, leaving the baby for last and the water was so dirty the saying "don't throw the baby out with the bath water came into effect.

It's an old saying that got started because back in the old days everyone use to have to bathe in the same water and by the end the water was so dirty they would say don't throw the baby out with the water..

Yes, it's actually from the middle-ages when people used to fill a large tub and bathe one after the other - maybe once a year. The children were always last.
