I have a 200 Chevy Cavalier, that has started making a loud whining noise when I turn wheel. As my car warms the noise subsides. As I let off the gas, the noise also dies down, and seems to whine more as I accelerate. Does anyone have an idea as to my cars problem?

Since you said that it happens when you turn the wheel, chances are it's something with your power steering unit.

This noise is also correlated to your engine RPM, as you did say the noise dies down when you let off the gas (The engine RPM drops).

There is a belt that is running to the power steering unit, and it could be wearing out, or just be loose. The behaviour of a loose or worn belt is a high pitched whining noise, and it would be correlated to the engine RPM. Also. when the belt warms up, it will tighten a little bit, which could cause the noise to subside.

Chances are it is the belt to the power steering unit, but also, the power steering unit itself could be low on fluid. And lasly, although this is highly unlikely, the unit could be wearing out. I really don't think this is the case, because you would really notice a difference in the way the steering wheel behaves.

I would take in to a mechanic and have them look at it. I suspect it's relatively minor to fix it, and it will be and inexpensive repair.

You either have a loose belt or a bad steering pump. Check the belt and make sure it's tight. Inspect the belt and see if there is any shiney spots or cracks. Usually if the belts bad it will make a squealing sound. Check the power steering fluid. If it is okay then the pump is bad. If it is low put some fluid in it. Do not over fill. Look for a leak. The hoses might be leaking or the steering pinion is leaking. You have Rack & Pinion steering.

It is the belt that drives the power steering. Im not sure whether your car is a serpentine belt or v belt but you should be able to take it to a mechanic and have him put a new belt on it anywhere from 50-75 bucks. HOPE THIS HELPS!!

A loose power steering belt is the most likely culprit.

Sounds like the Steering Pump.
If you have Power Steering fluid in it and it still does it, your pump is going out. Time to replace it.

check the fan belts. you need to see if they are good and tight if not they need replaced. if they are tight take some soap and run on the inside of the belt and it will go away.

A LOT OF PEOPLE WILL SAY IT IS YOUR PUMP.

TO FIND OUT REPLACE YOUR FLUID IN IT AND FLUSH IT OUT. WITH POWER STEERING FLUID.

YOUR FLUID MIGHT BE BURNT.
IT I CHEAPER THEN A PUMP.

THEN GO FROM THERE
