How do Americans view Germans (assuming you have not been to Germany, but have read about it, or heard about it in your education), and is the holocaust still a prevalent even for you in German history?

OK. Germans make great dark beer, which they drink while wearing traditional costumes. All the women look like Claudia Schiffer--tall, blonde, busty. All men look like Arnold. Germans have bad taste in music--David Hasselhoff?!!! Did you see Lily Tomlin's character in Austin Powers?

That doesn't address the holocaust though. I don't see Germany as filled with a bunch of Nazis if that is what you mean. I think that as with all events, it is taught in schools with an eye towards trying to understand the past and learning from it. I think the holocaust will always be tied to German history for Americans, but as I alluded to earlier, there is a more lighthearted view about Germans!

I went to a German Catholic high school, and so far I have only worked for German companies!

We don't really have a stereotype for Germans, just that you like beer I guess, but we like beer too. School's teach a lot about the holocaust in english class, we read Anne Frank, and we spend a long time in Global History learning about the Holocaust.

Blonde hair, blue eyes, six feet tall, with gorgeous women, and body builder men that both can drink me, or any other American under the table. All very friendly, clever, good engineers, and they are a very brave race for admitting that their ancestors were responsible for the holocaust, and they do their best to ensure that such a tragedy will never happen again.

Hah! It can't all be right. Anyone that can drink me under the table probably has a bigger beer gut than Michael Moore, and my daddy says only people with brown eyes can be good engineers... All the same, I might as well paint their nation with rose colored glasses until I can actually afford to visit.

meticulous, occasionally even slightly anal, and prone to over-react when perfection is not equally desired by those around.

Large blonde women and plenty of beer...and they make a great car.

basically, self-important and smug...no offense intended...You wanted honesty, true?

The holocaust is history, and was commited by a generation of people that barely exists today...i want to believe that most open-minded Americans will not blame an entire race or culture for an event they had no knowledge of or control over.

Each American doesn't want to be known forever as a slave owner, just as each German doesn't want to be known forever by the holocaust...We all come from primitive means, and most of us have managed to evolve beyond (in spite of?) these events.

I've heard that Germans are officious, nitpicking perfectionists, and that is why they make such excellent cars. I've also heard that they tend to be much more formal than Americans, which can only be a good thing.

My beloved father was German, and I can believe these things easily.

Oh, yes, the Holocaust: my father's family abhored the Nazis. Father served the U.S. Government during WWII in a most unusual capacity to help thwart them.

When I think of a German I think of someone who is stubborn, very particular, and snubs their nose at an American for being naive and silly.

But I know it's a stereotype and most I've met are not like this at all--but this is how I usually see them portrayed.

I think the first thing people think of is Hitler. But if you ask of what the think of the country now people will respond a lot better. We have no problem with Germany now but we grow up in history class learning about what happend so that's what we think of.

Muscular, Blonde and stubborn!!!

The Holocaust is ever present in my mind. When ever I see several buttons in one place, I think about it. When I see the Hisitic Jews walking on Fridays, I think of it, when I pass a synagogue, I think of it. It will always be there for me.
I have friends who were at Auschwitz...
