I need to know which is better; Pentium D or Core 2 Duo? I'm building a computer which will have (roughly):

1 8800 GTX nVidia video card
4 GB RAM
1 500GB hard drive

That's pretty much the only thing I can think of that's really affected by the CPU. The CPU I'm looking at is Pentium D 3.4GHz, and the Core 2 Duo is 2.66GHz. The FSB on the Core 2 Duo is 1066 or something, and the Pentium D is 800, I'm pretty sure that makes a difference.

I really want this system for playing Oblivion, 3D Modeling, and, well, pretty much every next-gen game that comes out. PS: I'm completely aware that they both have dual cores, so please don't tell me the Pentium D has one. Thanks!

Well apparantly the last guy didn't take a poll of every gamer, because I am a gamer who will tell you that the Core 2 Duo is the best processor out. It is the faster processor, and as I have had to explain to AMD people on here around a thousand times, faster is faster, no matter what you are doing.

Core 2 Duo is way better

The newest technology; its great for multi-tasking.
I own the E6600 model which does have a 1066 FSB and I believe runs at 2.4ghz (each cpu) and also has 4mb of L2 cache...the amount of cache the CPU has will also impact performance and teh E6600 model and up have significantly more than the D series.

I also have Oblivion and it looks amazing on my system; yet that is mostly due to the graphics card; I own the X1900XTX.

I checked out that 800 GTX Nvidia card; that's pretty pricy...but will obviously run very nicely. The ones I looked at had a lower core speed than my x1900xtx but a faster memory speed. Not exactly sure which is more imporant. But I'd take that and the number of pixel pipelines into account.

Intel core 2 Duo

human beings have a tendency to signify the Core2 duo good off the lower back because it has a extra recent structure. very nearly, this suggests the Core2 receives extra performed in step with CLOCK. So a twin middle Core2 at 2ghz might want to possess a Pentium D at 2ghz, because the Pentium D is depending on the netburst microarchitecture (which change into undesirable), even as the Core2 change into depending on the middle structure (which change into imaginitive). Now, the clockspeed massive difference complicates issues. Passmark says a Core2 at that clock speed receives one thousand-1200 factors or so, even as a Pentium D at 3ghz receives 800-850. inspite of the smaller cache and decrease clock speed, the Core2 looks heavily speedier than the Pentium D. in case you want a evaluation, vehicle engines are undesirable analogies. in step with annum, the approach used to make CPUs transformations, which potential there is extra room for transistors on more moderen CPUs. What seems a tiny 1300 CC engine will not be 1300CC: the Core2 has 290 million transistors, even as the Pentium has 230 million. Like a huge diesel or a LS6 V8, the core2 receives extra performed each stroke, or perhaps as the Pentium might want to be spinning at a extreme RPM, this is not putting out a lot skill. contained in the global of CPUs, relative gas intake relies upon on what year (and what procedure) the CPU change into made, even as relative speed relies upon on the micro-structure the CPU makes use of. The Core2 is extra effective, inspite of the specs. it truly is the reason you should in no way have self assurance marketed CPU specs like cache or clockspeed.

Core 2 Duo is the newer version of the Pentium D and is by far better. Another chip you might look at that is also very good and will get you a little better bang for your buck, is the AMD Athlon X2 (sockt AM2).

core 2 duo. no doubts about that. the core 2 duo has less pipelines so the ghz is less but faster. if you want dual core, both have it.

Core 2, of course.

if u r stricted to intel.. then go for duo 2
BUT if u need my advice and every gamers then go 4 AMD
which is better for gaming and kinda every thing in proccessing graphics and games + bigger L1 cache which is stronger than L2 and Intell's core duo 2
