turtles are very very very old beings. when they first crawled out of the sea it was to lay their eggs on land where they would be safe because there wasn't much on land except some plants, so nothing would eat their babies. a lot of species have come and gone since then, on land and in the water. and many of those species lived by eating turtle eggs and young turtles. these ancient animals have paid for their longevity by feeding many many other species. but their original strategy has worked for the for a long time. living in water but hiding their eggs on land turned out to be a winning strategy for hundred of millions of years.

Unless they are sea turtles, most of them live on land. I think the reason sea turtles come on land, is to lay eggs like alligators. I could be wrong though about the egg laying thing.
