Because freedom of speech means the government cannot stop you from speaking. The government does not own the phone companies.

"Freedom of Speech" gives you right to speak what ever you would like to speak probably to some body around you. But the Telephone gives you the Bill for carrying your words to a remote person (who can't hear your words without the medium of phone). It is as simple as that though you are free to go any where you want within the Territorial limits of a country, you have to pay for the train / flight which carries you to the place of your destiny.

Wow, what a fantastic question. I just realized that bush might be actually smarter than we think? If no freedom, then they would not attack us ? lol So bush wants to take the damn problem causing freedom away, it's a smart strategy for him, why fighting them, just kill their interest in US , no more freedom !? lol And for Illegal Immigration issues, use the same trick, now why do people cross the borders, $$$ is the answer, so destroy the economy and devalue US $, then they run like hell south bond direction !? The man could be a genius ? Regards.

Phone calls are recorded and they may take legal action, if you use too much of your freedom of speech inspite of paying the bills.

i work at a call center, and i bet that you're one of thoes jerks that always calls in trying to get a deal thru some dumb "loop hole" that they think they found. You pay the phone bill because you're useing a companys service. You do have freedom of speech, but no free phone service.

freedom of speech means that one is free to SAY whatever they want. It doesn't mean that the means of communication should be free

You have the freedom to speak your mind. Telephone's are tools to help you speak your mind and tools are not free.

Sweet Jesus are you serious ??
The First Amendment only permits you to HAVE speech... NOT free transmission of it. The phone companies are just that... privately held, publically traded COMPANIES, therefore entitled to just compensation for their services.
If you want everything for FREE... head on off to a Communist Country.

No body prevented you from going over to the other person and speak to him. If you want the technology to help you to speak to him, sitting in your house, you have to pay for the person who had invested in bringing the technology to your doorsteps. There is no free lunch.
