i have a 10 gallon tank that i dont want to put fish in... not big enough for anything really and i have two other fish tanks. i dont want little furry animals as i have cages for them if i wanted one. i wanted fire bellied newts but i can find any in the pets stores i go to-will not set foot in petland and wont buy/support petcetera. i saw fire bellied toads today but i dont really care for the live food thing-i read the newts could eat frozen thats why i liked the idea. i wanted something for beginners that are not too hard to look after. i have not had any kind of luck with ADF so maybe i should stay away from that type of animal altogether?? anyone have any other ideas??? or if anyone has had or has the toads before what do you think of them?
thanks!

I'm sorry to hear you have and a bad experience with Petland. I work in a Petland an I can tell you in our store ALL are animals are taken care of, clean and we train them as much as possible. We check and recheck our suppliers and have training to help ensure all our staff knows what they are talking about.

To bad you don't live in my area, we have fire belly newts that we've had for a while. (But there is no petectera in my province, so I know you're nowhere close.) Its usually children who want them and usually mothers think they are gross. From other stores I've been in, this is common and the reason most stores don't carry them, hard to sell.

Any store that has fish should be able to order newts for you. If odd for them not to be on the order form. Just ask at what ever pet store you feel comfortable at.

Newt will eat frozen, small live and freeze dried foods. Some fish flakes and bottom feeder pellets. They are VERY easy to take care of.

If you're in Canada or the States, I know that Big Als will carry them (I've seen three stores with them.) If you don't feel comfortable with Big Als, I just can't help you.

However, 10 gallon is perfect for a betta. Its not to deep for them, holds a filter, heater and lights or real plants.

I have about 10 10 gallons with my breeders in them.

A 10 gallon tank is perfect for a terrium extremely popular in the Victorian era and are not hard to look after. Do a search for terrium supplies and design your own. I designed a miniature tropical oasis with mini palm trees, sand, and a blue gravel water oasis. It's an excellent design element as the plants are living and add good "chi" energy to your home, it's good karma because it does not require purchasing live food, and because it is self-contained water rarely needs to be added so you can go away on vacation and it cares for itself!
