My wife and I are thinking of a big vacation for our 15th anniversary. We had friends try Mexico, but they both got violent diarrhea during their trip, wasting four of their seven travel days.

Am I better of going to the Caribbean or Hawaii than Mexico?

Or can you realibly travel in Mexico while avoiding Montezuma's revenge? If so, how?!

Stay at a resort. I went to Cancun last year and remained healthy. I drank a ton of water at our resort, but when we were away all I drank was bottled sodas. Also avoid seafood that might be rinsed in tap water if you are away from a modern resort.

It's true that you can expect some body changes whever you travel, but there are a few tips I have learned from living here in Mexico.
One of the main problems for visitors is that they are not used to the types of bacterias in a foreign country. The biggest problem comes from eating the foods prepared at the little outdoor carts. The food is great, but the wind is always blowing the sand and dust around. Once or twice a week eating there wouldn't be bad, but if you eat "comida del calle", food from the street (vendors) every day, your body will not adjust. Try to eat at the little restaurants indoors as often as possible.
Also, don't use the water to brush your teeth. Use bottled water - for everything. We don't have water reclamation plants as in the US and the tap water is just recycled from the drainnage (i.e. sinks, showers, toilets, etc.). Be careful when you shower not to get it in your mouth and remember if you make coffee in your room or ice cubes, USE THE BOTTLED WATER!
I cannot stress this enough.
You will probably be eating more fresh fruits and vegetables here than you normally do at home, so take this into consideration as well. If you forget the diarrhea medicine, there is a great one you can buy here without prescription at almost any farmicia. Cheap! It's called "LOPERAMIDA" and one teeny pill will stop the flow NOW!!!
Eat a variety of our great foods, drink plenty of bottled water, and just relax and enjoy yourself!! There's lots of fun stuff to do here!

You can have a great time, just avoid the water. Most of the locals can give you lots of info about not getting sick, but this is the best one I know of. Buy bottled water at the stores and use it for your cooking and everything. I know several people to travel Mexico and never get sick, so I think your friends showed some inexperience and unfortuneatly bad luck.

There is no way around it. You will get sick. I went to Mexico last year for 2 weeks and for one or two days I had diarrhea. I also went this past December for a month and my wife and two kids also got sick. Just take some medicine and you should be fine.

Don't drink the water and peel all fresh fruits and vegetables. Hawaii would be a completely different experience since you are still in the U.S.

Only drink bottled water and brush your teeth with bottled water.

A lot of the resorts have filtered water used in their kitchens so you don't have to worry about food prep details.

You can get diarrhea anywhere you go if you are not careful.
