I have to agree with the first answer - there is a beautiful romantic restaurant in Yountville, Northern California (in the Napa Valley) called "The French Laundry" - it is one of the top rated restaurants in all the world - there usually is a long waiting list to get in. It's a cute little "cottage" situated in a quaint town and the menu is exquisite....I had the good fortune to celebrate one of my birthdays there - I will never forget it....

Commander's Palace or Brennen's in New Orleans. Rainbow room or 4 seasons in NYC. Fairmont hotel in San Fran. Coronado hotel in San Diego. Trotters in Chicago. Antoine's in New Orleans. All Great Places all and all outrageous. Tavern on the Green in NYC is also a possibility

Edit You did ask for most famous as well correct? not colloquial, as some have answered!

Americans spent $884 per person on eating out in 2003.* That would just about cover dinner for two at Masa in New York City. The new Japanese restaurant in the Time Warner Center only accommodates 38 people per night and flies its seafood directly from Japan every other day. The prix fixe menu starts at $350 per person. o and tip isn't included

The Rainbow Room NYC!!

I'm sure other restaurants mentioned are better, but as far as famous goes, you gotta go to the Rainbow Room. Plus, how could the most famous, glamorous, luxury restaurant be in Michigan??

I think to truely get the full combination that you ask for, famous, elegant, romantic and expensive, I would choose Tavern on the Green in the evening. It is located in NYC's Central Park, surrounded by softly lit trees. I would highly recommend it to anyone! Sunday brunch is also wonderful!
