My 4 mo. old is formula fed. The doctor told me to start her on rice cereal twice a day. Since we've done this, my daughter has shown signs of being a little constipated. I'm sure it's from the loads of iron in rice cereal coupled with the iron-packed formula. What can I do?

Add a teaspoon or two of baby food apple sauce to the rice cereal or give her a 4 oz bottle of baby apple juice daily. Can use regular apple juice diluted by 1oz juice and 3oz water. Works naturally to prevent the constipation caused by the cereal.

Try to ensure she is getting enough liquids. Do you have to give cereal twice a day? That sounds like a lot for a 4 month old. I think I started my daughter on cereal once a day and then gradually increased to twice. You are right to suspect the iron.

I know that you've decided to feed her cereal for a while before adding fruits and veggies but the only thing that seems to balance Jaylea out in that department is to feed her fruit mixed in with her cereal to keep things moving along. This seems to keep her fairly regular, going about once or sometimes even twice a day.

I would maybe add baby prune food to her cereal not apple sauce...my doctor informed me apple sauce or juice can constipate a child even nore...other than that just wait it out...give her system time to get used to the cereal...it may take a few weeks....

I suggest a little apple juice or apple baby food. The fiber in it will help with the constipation. You could also give her extra water during the day. If it gets too bad don't hesitate calling your Dr.

Give her water bottles and maybe cut down on the amount of rice cereal your feeding her. she will be a little bunged up because her system isn't used to solid foods yet, but water definitly helps.

Try giving her some apple juice, make sure it is 100% juice, not so much sugar. Dilute the juice with water. I started with 60% water and 40% juice.
