I heard that the minuime wage is going up to $6.15 an hour. My question is that i am making 5.40 an hour would i just get .75cents to make the 6.15 or get a whole dollar? My one co- worker that i work with says he makes $6.50 and he thinks he will still get the dollar but i thought that the raise will only go to the people that makes under the $6.15 mark is that true? Could someone please tell me alittle better about the wage increase..

Thanks

If that happens, it depends on your company. You will at least be moved up to the new min wage rate, but your company may give you extra for since you are making more than the current min wage.

Amy:
Minimum wage is actually a rate set by the Federal Government, Department of Labor, under the FLSA (Fair Labor Standards Act) which can be superseded by a State Government (by increase only). If your state has no minimum wage law, then you revert to the amount set by the Federal Government, (currently $5.15, but soon to increase to $6.15). Unless you have an employment contract or union contract with your employer that requires your hourly wage to increase at the same rate of minimum wage increases ($1.00), you will most likely be increased to $6.15, or possibly relieved of your position if your employer is forced to make head cuts in order to comply with the new law.

As far as your Co-worker, he has no legal claim to an increase unless an employment or union contract exists (as explained above).

I would suggest that you stop worrying about the minimum wage and improve your own capabilities. People who are unable to spell or write legibly, are destined to be stuck at the minimum wage throughout their careers (although one could hardly refer to a minimum wage job as a career).

This may sound cold, but I'm actually attempting to impart some motivation to help you make the most of yourself and improve your future and life.

In most cases people earning below the newly legislated minimum wage will only receive an increase up to the established sum of $6.15 per hour.

No-one can answer that until the law is passed...it would be pure speculation until such time.
