Instead of selecting individual tracks and albums to listen to, create playlists and use those instead. This minimizes the amount of time you're fiddling with the scroll wheel and the screen is on.

The dimmer the screen and the lower the volume, the longer the battery lasts.

If you're talking about keeping the battery healthy so it holds a full charge each time, there's not really much you can do. Li-ion batteries don't have a memory effect like Ni-Cad's did, so there's nothing to be gained by fully discharging the battery every time before you recharge it.

When your battery finally does give up the ghost, do a Google search for "iPod battery replacement". There's lots of info online about how to replace the "irreplaceable" iPod batts.

if you are talking using the ipod and it running out of energy, using extra features, such as video, games, etc. ru n the battery down, so keep the use of those things down. if you mean to maintain the overall life of the battery, let the battery completely drain from time to time before recharging (recharge on your computer's usb connection to set the clock, as running the battery down resets the ipod clock to 12:00). a battery pack, such as those offered by belkin, can extend playtime, but may not recharge the battery-you will have to hook the battery pack to it and it feeds the ipod energy that way.
