When is it appropriate (or not!) to use your fingers to quote your spoken words? I find this mostly annoying, but someone must have some rules of etiquette for its uses...

The rule of thumb is, if you are able to hold an intelligent conversation without having to rely on pseudo punctuation, don't use "air quotes."

Unless you want to tell the world you are a twit, never use air quotes.
