A lot of ballot stuffing at Fenway Park and a lack of decent AL 2nd baseman got him an all-star invite. Loretta hit for a decent ave. but his OBP was poor. He certainly has little power.

And he was sure-handed at 2nd but his range was terrible

Not exactly your classic all-star.

Mark Loretta was hitting .305 with a .353 obp at the All Star Break and was fielding 1.000 which was the best in the American League for a regular 2B at the time (He ended the year at .994, still quite a bit above the League average of .986 at 2B). Both qualify him to be the All Star Selection. His range factor was higher than the league average for 2B too.

The Sox Nation is a rabid fan base who will stuff the ballot box for any player they like and Loretta is certainly a player Red Sox fans liked.

He was a deserving player considering the dearth of great 2B in the American League.

He may not have hit for power, but he made up for that with his contact hitting with a an average of .285 with 181 hits. Secondly he made 0 errors before the half and made only 4 errors afterward which gave him a fielding percentage for the season of a .994%. Plus he turned a total of 107 DP's. So there are a few reasons why he was named to the team not just of the fan base but for talent as well.

Because he played for the Red Sox, whose fans are notorious for stuffing the ballot boxes. Also most of them do not have lives so they sit at their computers all day and night and vote time after time after time. Loretta had a very good first half, but he was not all-star worthy. Nor was Varitek.

Robinson Cano should have made it, but he was placed on the D.L. a week before the game.

Being a Red Sox fan I saw allot of him last year and in first half of year it was both defnsive skills and hitting, although his hitting was not as good in second half of season which is why the Sox let him go. Too bad, I thought he was a good player.

Although he did hit well...second base in the AL isn't exactly filled with talent...also Red Sox fans fill ballot boxes for every position

Hitting pretty much. He was a contact hitter all year and had very few strikeouts. Also, having a high fanbase in Boston got him many votes.
