While American Indians were murdered and displaced as "heathens" the earliest white settlers were fringe-lunatic Protestant refugees from European countries where the national governments had plenty to say about which church was acceptable. I was raised a Lutheran and at times I feel a certain respect for the religious principles which seem to have shaped civilization. Still, religious extremists are at the battlefront of great political conflicts. They have made population control a taboo or NOT politically correct topic and I bitterly resent those who are trying to out populate ME! As for all the tax-exempt churches in my area...hundreds of them..very few provide any real use except on Sunday mornings and employing a few folks and kicking more local money to foriegn missions and the next management group in Missouri or Utah. No housing for the homeless, no clinics, no food service, no school activities. Yet these huge buildings take up space, lawn care, have large energy consumption. I like the pot lucks but really? And that's for the Christians... give me American Indian or Unitarians....the rest can go to H E double hockey stick.
