As a labor doula, I bring my own bag of "tricks" to the hospital. Although a lot of things never come out of the bag, here are a few I've found useful:

lollipops - all different flavors - mom's mouths get dried out quickly when they start breathing heavily. Lollipops are a great way to keep mouths moist, and give mom some sugar to bring up energy levels. Since during labor some smells/flavors may bother you, pack a few different flavors so you can be sure to have one you like. Diabetic moms can pack sugar free candies.

A rice sock - get a tube sock and fill it full of uncooked rice. Knot the top and you have a rice sock! You can microwave these in the hospital's food room starting at 2 minutes, then shake, and put back in for 30 second intervals until it's nice and warm. These are great for that lower aching back or around the belly during contractions. *NOT FOR USE FOR MOMS WITH AN EPIDURAL - please remember that if you have an epidural, you can't feel the heat and can get burned by a sock that's too hot because you can't feel it.

Peppermint essential oil, a few cotton balls - add 2-4 drops of peppermint oil to a cotton ball and wave it under mom's nose if she's feeling nauseous. You can purchase essential oils at a health food store.

Snacks, juice boxes - These are more for your partner during labor so he/she doesn't have to leave the room, but also for mom after the birth. Many moms are tired and thirsty, and a couple of boxes of apple juice does the trick nicely.

Old Slippers - It's great to walk around during labor to help move things along. Shoes or slippers to slip on and off quickly are great. Bring ones that you won't mind having to throw out in case they get fluid or blood on them.

Pillows - Bring at least one. Once I was at a birth and the hospital had run out of pillows - mom didn't even have one for her head! Remember to put on a bright colored pillowcase so when moving to your postpartum room, you can easily spot your pillow and not forget to bring it with you. The smell of your own pillow reminds you of home during labor, so it can be relaxing!

That's just a few, but I hope it helps! Oh, and it's nice to have one bag packed for labor, and another bag for afterwards, so you can find your labor tools without having to dig through everything else.

I took a robe, toiletries such as a toothbrush and paste, comb and brush, and small makeup compact, so I could look presentable for visitors, some underwear and comfortable bra (nursing if u will be nursing) and some comfortable flat shoes. Also bring a change of clothes for ur discharge from the hospital. For the babe, bring a blanket, one for when u leave to put in the carseat, and one to wrap him/her in. The nurses also let me put a shirt on my daughter, instead of one the hospital provides, just to be more personal, so that can be an option for u. I took a small brush for my daughter, so I could hold her and brush her hair. The hospital usually provides u with diapers and wipes for the baby, but u can still pack them if u'd like. If u are going to breastfeed, nursing pads and a bottle or two to store milk. My hospital provided me with a pump system, so its up to u whether u want to bring one. It might be a good idea to call the hospital and ask what all they provide so u don't have to bring so much.
Good luck and God Bless!

The number one thing is the babys outfit you are going to bring he/she home in. Pjs for you so you don't have to were those horrible things from the hospital. A camra/camcorder a brush and your toothbrush. I wouldn't worry about a hair dryer doing your hair is going to be on the bottom of the list for the next 3 weeks. Don't worry about diaper the hosptial supplys those and pads for you they also supply. So good luck to you.oh yeah and the babys car seat.

The other lists are great.

Be sure to bring diapers and wipes for the baby, don't forget the car seat... you can't leave the hospital without one.

Also, make sure you have snacks for your partner in case he gets hungry in the middle of the night when all food courts are closed.

Oh, and remember your chapstick and hair elastics, you'll want to get your hair off your face and your lips get dry as hell with all that panting.

For you:
Robe
Nightgown/PJ's
Hairbow/Brush
House shoes
Socks
Chap stick
Panties
Maxi pads
Tight fitting bra
Camera's

They will have toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo, baby wipes, diapers, pacifier, formula and bottles at the hospital.
They will most likely give you a diaper bag.

For your baby:
Socks
1-2 outfits (One for the photo op)
Mittens (To keep from scratching their face)
Car Seat
Take the baby book so they can stamp their foot print in it
Onesies
Heavy blanket (If it is cold where you are)

Leave your purse home, anything valuable. Just take a couple of dollars for soda

Good luck and Congrats

The best things you should bring along are extra clothes. lost of underwear, depending on how long you stay-maybe some nursing pads for your bra. some feminine pads, lots of reading material. travel games....make up, hairbrush, toothbrush, baby outfits, and diapers. Slippers. camera. video camera. The hospital usually has a lot of these items, but you can never be to careful.-congratulations

When you first went or one of your visits to your doctor they should have given you a book or some sort of imformation on what you should bring with you in your hospital bag.
