i have a plate that is oven proof but looks almost like it has shattered (but it is still in one piece). It is a bunch of fine cracks.

It means that it is safe to use it in the oven. Depending on the overall quality of the plate it may or may not be safe at high temperatures (e.g. 450+) but it should be safe to heat food or warm the plate.

The cracks you see may just be "crazing" which is damage to the finish of the plate. If the look of the cracks doesn't bother you too much you can still use the plate.

Oven proof means you can use it for a container to bake something. It will take a high heat without shattering!

I think that would mean that the plate is able to be put into an oven, and withstand hot temperatures.

It means it won't be damaged by the heat of the oven.
