I'm from Tennessee where we always had the tree out by the New Year. Now I live in Ohio. I think the traditional time to take the decorations here is around January 6th. From what I hear, that is when the wise men found Jesus.
I think it's weird too, and I live here!
More information ripped from Wikipedia that probably relates:
The Twelve Days of Christmas and the associated evenings of those twelve days (Twelve-tide), are the festive days beginning the evening of Christmas Day (December 25) through the morning of Epiphany on (January 6).
The Twelve Days of Christmas as a celebration and festival is old and steeped in traditions from Christian cultures around the world. For many, the idea of the 12 days as a length of celebration is based on a sequence of verses in the Holy Bible (Matthew 2:1-12), and a belief that it may have taken 12 days for the three kings (also called wise men or magi) to travel to Bethlehem after first seeing the star.

Same reason people out here in California still have their trees up and lit---it's winter, it's dark and cold, the Christmas tree is the sign of light and warmth and hope.

Probably the same reason some people leave their lights on their house all year round. They just don't want to take them down, or they are too lazy to.
