i need someone to help me shed a bit of light on this. i have this big question to answer. the question is:

the speed of linguistic spread depends largely upon the ecology in which a language evolves. critically assess the spread of english in terms of colonialism and international capitalism.

does this mean i need to argue either yes, ecology is a factor or no it isnt. i dont even know what international capitalism is. I just need somone to suggest ways in which i could answer this. i really havent got a clue. im stumped. any help, however little it may be would be very much appreicated.

I think they are stating that ecology is a factor. What you need to do is give an argumentative description of how colonialism and international capitalism have affected the spread of English. Sounds interesting =) good luck...... and thanks, I think I feel the seed of an idea for my dissertation beginning to grow! xx

I agree with Dot, you could also look in to British colonies and how they came about, this will give you an idea of where and how it started and how capitalism within the colonies grew. I dont know if what I have just written makes any sense, i think the question has been worded to sound a lot difficult than it actually is...
I think this extract may help you make a start, or atleast give you ideas of what to start reading..............

'It has been based on unequal exchange, that is, the exchange of manufactured products, sold very expensively in the colonies by commercial monopolies supported by the State, for the purchase of products or primary products at very low prices, since they were based on labour that was almost without cost - provided by the peasants and workers located at the periphery. During all the stages of capitalism, the plunder of the resources of the peripheries, the oppression of colonized peoples, their direct or indirect exploitation by capital, remain the common characteristics of the phenomenon of colonialism'

Good luck
