I have to do a paper on a famous guitar player. I thought that I would pick a woman, because most people proably won't. So far I have:
Joan Jett
Jennifer Batten
Bonnie Raitt
Who would you choose?

OK, I've seen many FAMOUS guitar players listed here, but not all are GOOD, too (particularly Edge - he's pathetic).
The really good women guitarists are Bonnie Raitt and - among the best guitarists overall, as decided by Steve Vai - Mimi Fox (jazz, look her up).
Historically, the really great and innovative ones were:
Django Reinhardt
Jimi Hendrix
Robert Fripp
Steve Howe
Steve Hackett
Jeff Beck
Adrian Belew
John McLaughlin
Pat Metheny (THE best I know of)
Joe Satriani
and of course Steve Vai
Look out for Jake Cinninger of Umphrey's McGee, though - if I had to name a Hendrix reincarnate, he'd be the one. The next guitar god beyond competition.

Joan Jett is not a guiitarist - just hitting chords in accompaniment is not the same as being a guitarist. Hear Mimi Fox to understand.

Eddie Van Halen, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Duane Alman, Lita Ford, Joan Jett, Heart (the Wilson sisters) If you want my choice of females it would have to be Joan Jett and the Blackhearts. She rocked when I was a teenager.
