Alot of Americans are full of it. They have this attitude that they are right and everyone else is wrong. Especially Conservative Republicans. It's really a problem with stupidity and ignorance. Not all of us are that way though. Please remember some of us are trying to change things for the better not only for our country, but also for the rest of the world.

Most people don't take criticism well from outsiders. It's the same reason you might be able to openly criticize your sibling, but you still get offended when someone from outside the family says the same things about your sibling. It's just part of human nature.
Another contributing factor is that criticisms of America are often based on ignorance. Outsiders often assume that the American people are uniform in thought and belief, and grossly oversimply the way our political process works. Naturally, we're not going to respond well to that kind of criticism.
Similarly, I wouldn't expect Brits, Kiwis, or Canadians to respond well to Americans who criticize THEIR societies based on faulty premises. Just think of how you respond if you heard an American criticizing your country's health care or defense policies based on outlandish, grossly exaggerated stereotypes.

because it is insults, not criticism. The rest of the world talks of helping others, we just get up and do it. I realize that is a generalization and that some nations help as best they can. On the other hand, no nation is more willing to put it's money where its mouth is than the United States. Sometimes I feel that it is like watching a SuperMan movie, where some idiot yells at SuperMan for not getting to him or her as quickly as they would like. This country has it's own problems that need dealing with, yet we try to do what we can for others at a rate no other nation can claim. We are not wealthy, we merely have a standard of living that keeps us working more hours than any other industrialized nation. Perhaps we as a nation are spoiled, but this spoiled kid of a nation has bailed out most of you at one time or another at great cost to us, perhaps that is why you criticize us so much?

You will only find that kind of myopia amongst those on the American Right. Everyone else is reasonable and understands that the US is not the center of the universe and that other peoples actually have some valid criticisms from time to time.
I apologize for the conservatives. They often make us look bad overseas.

I don't think that's the case with all Americans. I know we're far from perfect so why would I be above criticism? I'm critical myself of Americans on some issues. Criticize the issues not the people.

Blind patriotism and listening too much to their own propaganda. Like the bully in school - he is the biggest and strongest...and doesn't have to take crap from anyone. Criticism is healthy...and yet in all your answers, it seems that people regard criticism as a negative thing! Reactionary! If you listen carefully to the criticisms, you might learn something. But like that bully, Americans feel they don't need to listen to anyone!

We are like any other family, we have our faults but we stick together when the going gets tough. Also, they are dependent upon our country for trade, money and our military might should they need us, therefore they should have our backs and not be too critical.

Because we are selfish and paranoid and think that we dont do wrong. Because we take any criticism as an attack. Because the US is a young teenage country. We are children - brats. Im embarassed.

Criticism is fine and constructive. Insults however are another matter entirely. To me it would depend on the statement being made.
