The player (or players) missed would be out. So if the sixth place hitter batted, and then the eighth place hitter stepped up to the plate, the seventh place hitter would be automatically out (and the inning over if there was already two outs).

There is none unless the other team appeals the improper batter. If appealed the improper batter is out, proceed with the proper batter. This is wild because a batter could bat out of turn get a hit (basehit or HR),a appeal is made the improper batter is called out and taken off the bases. This same guy could be the proper batter thats supposed to bat next get another hit therefore being the first man in history to get back to back hits HR's or other hit. This will never happen in MLB,because of the public address announcer, announces who's supposed to bat.

It depends.

If the offense or defense catches the error while the incorrect batter is at the plate, the offense simply puts the correct batter in the box with whatever the count was on the incorrect batter.

If the defense catches the error after the incorrect batter is retired or reaches base and before the next pitch, then the proper batter is called out and the incorrect batter leaves the bases. Any advancement on the bases as the result of the incorrect batter's actions is nullified and runners are returned.

If the defense doesn't catch the error after the incorrect batter is retired or reaches base, then the batting order resumes with the player whose name follows that of the incorrect batter.

If the next proper batter is on base, the order simply skips him and picks up with the player whose name follows his in the order.

Say the order is Abel, Baker, Carson, Dawson. Instead of Abel batting, Baker does instead. If the team batting discovers the error, Baker simply returns and Abel takes his place in the batter's box with whatever count Baker had on him. If the defense discovers and brings the error to the plate umpire's attention at this point, the same thing happens.

However, if Baker reaches base, the offense is screwed; Carson must bat next. If the defense brings the error to the umpire's attention at this point -- before a pitch is thrown to Carson or whichever player bats after Baker -- then Abel (the correct batter) is declared out (with the putout credited to the catcher) and Baker goes back to the batter's box to hit again. If, after Baker reaches base, the defense does not bring the error to the umpire's attention, the batting order resumes with Carson; Abel is skipped.

If Baker hits in Abel's spot and singles and then Abel comes to the plate and singles, the next batter would be Carson because Baker is on base.

Keep in mind that it is the CORRECT BATTER WHO IS CALLED OUT when the defense appeals batting out of order and an out ic called.

Fairly simple - the batter is out. MLB rule #6.07(a):

6.07
BATTING OUT OF TURN.
(a) A batter shall be called out, on appeal, when he fails to bat in his proper turn, and another batter completes a time at bat in his place.
(1) The proper batter may take his place in the batter’s box at any time before the improper batter becomes a runner or is put out, and any balls and strikes shall be counted in the proper batter’s time at bat.

There are no "penalties" in baseball.

The batter who batted out of order would be called out.
