it is a 4x4 (still not certain if the 4x4 traction works) on account of the indicator light does nothing when button is pressed & i dont feel anything in the wheels when pressed, so i ignore it

call your ford dealer they will tell you 10w/30 or 5w/30.anything thicker than 10w/30 will cause excessive engine wear on cold start up.

Alot of people use 10W-30 but there is a sticker in your engine compartment that gives the recommended weight. Ford has released a TSB that now says "Per TSB # 99-8-16 regarding oil viscosities." One of the vehicles mentioned is your 1991 Ford Explorer. It states:

"ISSUE
Ford Motor Company now recommends SAE 5W-30 viscosity grade for servicing any Ford gasoline-powered vehicle regardless of model year.

ACTION
When servicing any Ford gasoline-powered vehicle, use SAE 5W-30 viscosity grade motor oil. Refer to the following text for further details.

Both SAE 10W-30 and SAE 5W-30 viscosity grade motor oils have been recommended in the past depending on vehicle model and model year. "

Some people run 5W30 in the winter and 10W30 in the summer, depending on how cold it gets where you live. You can run 5W30 year around, gives alittle better fuel economy.

Hey!! Coco Pine____use the 10W --40 Valvoline and a new filter by Wix........do not run any cleaners thru the engine or the cooling system----change the oil in 90 days and only drain the radiator and block and refill with about 50/50 water and anti-freeze solution....since you are asking about oils I consider that this is a new vehicle to you and at it's age be careful about changing stuff as this car is used to running at factory sets...

Golly....depends on 1) how many miles on it 2) where do you drive it?? How do you use it?? Different weights are used under different driving conditions, engine conditions.
