in reality, whenver your ipod is plugged into the computer, it's in "disk mode" weather you see it displayed or not. disk mode basically means the ipod is no longer in playback mode, but it's acting as an external hard drive.
this is it's normal behavior, and in fact, without itunes, it operates as a standard external drive. all itunes does to the equation is take your mp3's, copy them to random locations on the ipod (yes, even entire albums wind up with the files split up in all kinds of places), then updates a database in the ipod to tell it where the files are.

it just means that it's able to carry other files apart from music files. Press Menu and the Select button together and it'll go away
