THERE IS A DIFFERENCE!

I'm a lifelong fan of Hip Hop music...not Rap. There is a difference. Rap music is a music that caters to a commercial audience. It's not done for the love of it, basically it's only done for money. It's the stuff that's shoved into your ears on the radio (although, there is some great music on the radio every now and then). That's why you have your Nelly's, Chingy's, Bow Wow's, etc. Those are not Hip Hop artists. Hip Hop is a culture (emceeing, djing, grafitti art, breakdancing/bboying). Hip Hop music has substance. The emcee focuses on his/her lyrcs. The lyrics are not just thrown together to rhyme...it's more than that. There's meaning behind it. It's rhyming in the most clever way, using metaphors and similes, etc.

Like KRS ONE said, "Rap is something you do, Hip Hop is something you live."

"Hip hop music" and "rap music" mean virtually the same thing. However, some people associate the term "rap" with the more mainstream variety of the genre (which nowadays often includes R&B or pop elements) and reserve the term "hip hop" for the variety of the genre that stays closer to the roots of hip hop music (i.e. - speaking on social and/or political issues, storytelling, bragging about one's lyrical skills while roasting another MC, etc.). A quick example...

Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Common, A Tribe Called Quest, etc. = hip hop
Pall Wall, Chamillionaire, Chingy, Young Jibbs, etc. = rap

See the difference?

But to be really specific, hip hop itself is a culture. Rap music or hip hop music (specifically, MCing) is just one element of that culture. The other elements of the culture are graffiti, breakdancing (aka - breakin'), DJing and a more recently added element, beatboxing.

Rap is someone saying o bunch of words that rhyme, or repronouncing the words so they do, and saying them with a drum machine. Hip hop is more dance style music, usually with the same type of vocals while using the beat of some classic rock song.
