they asked the crowd during one of their concerts what their name should be and someone screamed out fall out boy (referring to a simpsons character) so they chose it not knowing about the character :)

Someone suggested it to them when they had their big break and appeared on TV for the first time (Before they were popular) . It was a talk show I think and someone in the crowd said "Fall Out Boy". They share their name with Radioactiveman's sidekick from the Simpsons but they didn't know it had anything to do with that at the time. That's what I heard
