All three are fantastic, but nothing is more haunting than The Shining.
Terrifying in print.
Carrie much the same.

Cujo, while scary at times was a pretty easy read.

I didn't care much for Carrie but perhaps I should give it another chance and read it again.

Loved Cujo although I hated one part of it that King did in the story (I don't want to give it away). It was a great easy read. I got very involved with the problems the parents were having with their marriage and was distracted into not noticing the other danger that was approaching. Also, I found that as in most of King's novels, he was very good with characterization of the evil characters as well as the good characters. He does so well at showing us the humanity of people, whether they end up good or evil...you can sort of understand why they became the way they did. It was an excellent book and I highly recommend it.

I loved the book, The Shining, and found it VERY scary. I was pretty young when I first read it and had to sleep with the lights on for several nights in a row. The movie version with Jack Nicholson was complete crap as they made it look like the father was crazy from the very start....of course, Jack Nicholson just looks like that anyway. ha ha But, the book was excellent, very scary, very engrossing, hard to put down. An excellent book...be prepared to have goosebumps and your hair stand up on the nape of your neck. :) And again very good at the characterizations and development of the characters. King is a fantastic writer.

Carrie - Carrie was a frighteningly brutal and honest insight to the horrors many kids face in school. The description of a girl slowly approaching not only womanhood, but some dangerous, incredibly dark power, makes for a powerful and involving story.

Cujo - Cujo is a book that confirms not only the fright of a young child and the decline of an animal's sanity, but also shows a family on the brink of falling apart. It's by a monster that they manage to hang on. Very sad and gripping book.

The Shining - Again, a family that's basically dying. Fueled by a husband's alcoholism, and a wife's distrusting behavior. The powers of their son aren't so much the focal point, as the story of a father and husband struggling to overcome not ghouls, but himself.

Carrie was good if a little to long in explanation. Cujo sucked. The Shining was by far the best of the three. But in my opinion the best book was THE STAND.

All three are fantastic, scare your pants off, novels. King is a master! The only problem I have with his books is they are too realistic or too close to being realistic. Therefore, they affect me too much and really stick with me . The dog in Cujo could be my dog, The girl in Carrie could have been in my junior high (middle school)...or could have been me. The man in The Shining was just an ordinary husband, could have been a man I would marry.
Now THAT is scary.

Carrie- This book is not thick, it is more of an easy read, but it has just the right amount of detail to balance the dark and demented events.

Cujo- This is a pretty intriguing story (kind of boring at times, though) but it focuses way too much on the back story. If you are looking to read this book for big action with the dog, you'll be disappointed

The Shining- I think that this is by far Stephenie King's most successful attempt at horror because not only did it scare me, it connected with me on a deeply. I'll admit, though, is is a little hard to really get into at the beginning.

The Shining...hands down!
The movie was indeed crap compared to the book.
I got frightened reading it in the daytime.
I do not think Cujo and Carrie make it to the top five of Kings' works.
