I'm 17 years old and I want to get a debit card because its annoying to buy everything with cash but everyone tells me that you have to be 18, but I've seen other kids with debit cards. How can I get one?

Go visit your local banks to see if they offer you an ATM debit card when you open an account with them. If they want your business, you will let you know the requirements. Many banks offer their customers ATM debit card if you have an account with them. So, go and find out to see which bank is best for you. Factors that you need to consider is that what is the minimum balance required to avoid monthly service charge. In addition, many banks offer special banking packages for students as well. This may sound a lot of work, but it will be beneficial to you in the long run.

Some banks will open accounts with a parent on the account. This will come with limited privileges. It may require the parent to link a savings account or a line of credit to your account in case you spend more money than is in the account.

Speak with your parents. This is a good time to get into good spending habits, especially if you are going to go away to college. For instance, your parents might consider opening a small savings account, linked to your account. If you spend too much money, your bank will take money from the savings account. This has two benefits. Firstly, your parents can control how much of their money you spend. Secondly, you learn how easy it is to spend money with plastic. There will be times you will spend too much. If you spend WAY over, your transaction will be declined at the checkout and you will have learned a valuable lesson at (hopefully) minimal cost. Much better to do it with a debit card than a revolving credit card.

It would be useful if you could get an account which allows oyu to view activity online, so that you can see how much you have.

Of course, maybe your parents have already taught you about money management, in which case, just ignore me because it really is none of my business.

Hope this helps.

Go to the bank. Most Debit cards come straight from a checking account. If you are responsible I think 17 is a good age to start.

Have your parents help you set up a checking account at their bank. Usually the bank will give you a debit card with a visa or mastercard logo on it that takes money from your bank account. You don't have to be 18, you just need an established bank account and a bank that gives you the card, and probably an adult to set up the account. Hope this helps.

You will have to go with your parents to a bank and open a bank account to be able to get one. You will also be able to get checks too if you so choose. If I am not mistaken you will have to put your parents on the account as well.
