How can the same player legitimately be sent off TWICE in the same game. This actually happened this season in Scot Div I, apparently previously unprecedented!(Will post answer after the Liverpool- Arsenal match)

Some good answers! But the one I was thinking of is where the PLAYER/MANAGER is sent of the field of play, then stands in the technical area as he is entitled, and then gets sent off to the stand for abusing an official. Definitely happened this season in Scots Div 1-don't know the teams though- anyone?

A player could be sent off the pitch and then go and sit in the dug-out with the rest of the substitutes etc.

He could then be sent off from the dug-out.

The guy is Andy McLaren formerly of Dundee
- he got3 red cards against clyde
The ref can show as many as are appropriate
to a players actions, in this case it was :
two footed lunge #1
punching an opposition player #2
shouting at the ref on his way off #3

Hmm, the only player/manager in scot div 1 is alex rae (dundee again!). He's a bit of a hard man midfielder, and got more than his share of red cards back in his heyday. It seems as if he's the guy you're thinking of.

First he's sent off from the pitch, then the stand.
I'm watching the Arsenal v. Liverpool too. Just turned 3-1.

A player can be sent off before, during & after the game. If he or she is anywhere where it constitutes as part of the Ground - then he or she can be carded.

So say for example a player is booked or rather sent off on the pitch if a further incident occurs after this the referee can warrant for the player to be escorted off the premises.

When a player is sent off he is meant to retire to the dressing room not to the bench He can get dressed and watch the rest of the game but even after getting changed he still can not return to the dugout/bench
