I had to go in and change all my passwords and security questions today because someone sent me a spoof email pretending to be ebay and said my account had been suspended it looked just like ebay and good thing i questioned it because i hadn't been selling on ebay for awhile and it said my fees were not paid so they suspended my account but my fees come out automatically so i contacted ebay and they said it was a fake email and to safe guard my account. So I did but just wanted to warn everyone to be careful and watch your emails and accounts. I had someone get my password before and took $400 out of my paypal account but bank gave it back to me so be careful.

This is very common, and if you deal with ebay and paypal, you should really know this by now. Just follow the basic guidelines posted at each website to prevent fraud, like:

http://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=p/gen/email-security-outside

http://pages.ebay.com.sg/help/confidence/isgw-account-theft-protection.html

http://www.scambusters.org/CreditCardFraud.html

Most all of the companies will make a point of telling you that they will NEVER ask for sensitive info, such as account numbers, credit card info, SSN, etc. via e-mail.

Also, a quick and easy way to spot a spoof e-mail is to mouse over the link. It will nearly always point to some random ip address. The real address will always be a secure link that's straight to the point, like https://www.paypal.com/

Set your email program to read all messages as plain text (NOT HTML). Then these spoof emails won't look like they come from eBay (or PayPal, or your bank) any more.

If you want to read emails as HTML, then you can always turn HTML back on, after you make sure the email is genuine.

It happens all the time.
The only time you need to worry is if you have clicked on a link, or made changes through the link.
The link may load items down, or some people fill in info on the link... then thats the time to worry. It needs the active execution of code or a file for it to be a problem.

yeah...that happens all the time. I haven't gotten some from ebay. But I got three from "paypal" in the span of a week. But I knew that paypal doesnt pull crap like that and I reported these sites/emails to Paypal.

when you get emails like this, REPORT THEM TO THE COMPANY BEING IMPERSONATED!

I get lots of bogus ones pretending to be ebay, paypal and banks I don't even have accounts with !
The crooks are tenacious but I can smell them at 30 paces now.
Hope no one is buying into the Nigerian or lottery scams anymore . . . (reportedly the preacher who was killed by his wife . . . they had gotten into the nigerian scam & lost lots of $$)
