Meditation is simply awareness without choice. The sound of the rain, the traffic on the street, or any activity or situation you find yourself in can be the place for your meditation. If you can learn to just be aware, wherever you find yourself, you are in meditation. If there is any Truth, it is right in front of you, for there is no other moment or reality outside of this one. This moment is your opportunity, and your awareness is the key to opening it up.

Gee, I never knew higher powers were necessary to meditate... The most rudimentary form of meditation is controlled breathing. Even ten minutes a day (in the morning) can make a big difference. Sit in silence, relaxed, and just focus on the air going in your nostrils and out your mouth. If your mind wanders, immediately refocus on your breathing. It's only boring if your mind wanders into thinking "this is boring." If you're relaxed, your breathing should slow down. Take long deep breaths.
To go further, once you've slowed your breathing you can concentrate on muscles at a time. Start with your toes and allow them to relax. Then move up your body, relaxing each part individually. Do this slowly. Once you are 100% relaxed, you might like to allow your mind to wander a little. This works best if you've determined an issue you'd like to ponder ahead of time. With a quiet mind, you'll understand the problem more clearly.
I don't like to bed too relaxed, like in a bed, because then I go to sleep. I think this is why many sit in the not-entirely-comfortable crossed-legged 'lotus position.' A sturdy chair will do- posture is important.

If you're an athiest and aren't open to any help from a higher power, you've put yourself in charge of your life.
Meditation is all about spirituality. It won't help you if you're not accepting of it's spiritual acpects.
I'll pray that you find more openess to the energy that created you.
in the meantime, smoking pot is not going to help you escape, get a good job or make you healthy. I suggest you see a doctor and ask for some xanex to calm you down, if you suffer from anxiety. You can also get some really good help from the attached link that is 100% drug free. You need to clear your mind and that can't happen while you're steadily anestized.
May peace be with you.

Meditation is not about religion, there are no higher powers involve. I am free thinker and I meditate too. You can do it by sitting down or lying on a flat surface. Just relax your body and mind. Don't think of anything. Or just imaging you are in a wide space (a field or something), clear sky above you, you can feel the breeze........ Or just imaging dark sky and stars and you are floating passing the sky, approaching the starts, travel at your free will. Anything that can relax you!

meditation is when you leave yopur body and travel in your spirit body.
That sucks you don't beleive in spirits or souls,
What do you believe man??
God is a lie, there is only the creator, and out creator is probably just the nucleus of an atom in the next dimention.
hahahahahahah
life is funny.
Ok you want to meditate and gain clarity.
Smoking MJ wont help man, I know. It makes you all shaky and it is impossible to keep ytou body still.
you shopuld be compleately lucid.
Sit down where ity is comfortabvle and then just try to clear you mind of all thoughts.
It is hard to do but it works after trying.
when ever you find yourself tyhinking about your girl, or about video games or something, just try clear you mind.
Now I should tell you this.
Spirituality is not religion man.
I feel yuou and understand why you are athiest, cause what the church is telling us is a load of bull.
There omnipotrent god is a jopke. God created in our image to help the stupid masses visualize what god is.
Then to use that image to control the people.
Both you and I know that this is carp.
But, if you really find you clarity and can meditate, you find that you cvan travel out of this physical body and travel witrh your astral body. Pretty cool **** man.
Where do you trhink we go when dreaming????.
hahahahaha.
Clear you mind.
Free you mind Neo, free your mind

I never though religion had to be a part of meditation. My introduction to it was a means of refocusing and relaxing one's self.
I was taught as follows, and of course, all such practices should be done in consideration of your own personal situation and are done at your own risk:
Still your mind and begin by focusing on your heartbeat. When you're still enough to feel it, concentrate on relaxing the muscles of your limbs from the tips of your toes and fingers inward. You may go in a clockwise or counter clockwise direction, spending around 30 seconds per limb. Then, focus on relaxing yourself from the base of your spine up to the top of your head. That is the physical aspect.
The mental aspect is to attempt to separate from the endless flow of thoughts through the mind; not necessarily stopping thought, but to be aware of it and to find a place separate from it from which to observe yourself as a third person would. To do this, focus on the idea that you are here and now, without living in memory. Hear the sounds in the room, experience your breathing, other sensations you feel in the immediate moment; this is a childlike state of receptivity, when the world is new and there are no memories to cloud your perception of reality. We loose this quality of perception as we grow older.
You will be able to extend the amount of time it takes for you to receed into memory as you practice this, and in turn have greater control over your thoughts and reactions as you proceed into daily life.

Meditation really has nothing to do with religion. Just sit quietly in a room by yourself for a while and try to clear your mind. Some people find it helpful to listen to calming music or repeat a phrase over and over, but that is not neccessary. You might also try progressive muscle relaxation--concentrate tension first in your feet, then relax, then concentrate tension in your calves, and relax. Repeat this for every muscle from your feet to your tongue.

Sit in a chair with your feet flat on the floor and your hands resting on your thighs. Close your eyes and start breathing slowly and rythmically, in through the nose, hold, out through the mouth, hold... Concentrate on relaxing your muscles. Begin with your toes and work your way up your body, letting every muscle relax. This is a good time to let your thoughts come in. Just before you end your session, imagine sunshine pouring into you from the top of your head and filliing you from your head down to your toes. Let it pour in; you can't take in too much light!

You actually seem SCARED that someone might send you a religious or spiritual word! You can meditate with calming music, incense, putting yourself in a VERY comfortable space (pajamas, soft chair or bed, warm blanket), etc., and letting your mind drift off. Did something happen in your life that you are so uptight about the aforementioned? Geeze!

You can meditate without religion. Meditation is just a way of calming yourself and clearing your mind. Just sit on your bed and relax and think about stuff a while. I don't think you need a god or MJ to do that.
