Bananas are constantly producing new plants, called pups I think, alongside their trunks. Just split one off with as many roots as you can get, and pot it up. Once it gets big and produces its own pups, always keep a few of these pups growing along. When a banana fruits, that trunk dies, and if you don't have some pups coming along, you will have to start back over from scratch.

You can buy tons of different varieties on eBay, even winter hardy varieties that can be left outside in your area (musa basjoo).

If you're trying to propate one from an existing plant, they naturally produce offsets from the parent bulb as they grow. Best seperated in spring.
