The "treasure" was originally amassed by the Knights Templar during the holy crusades. It was moved to hiding in the new world when the a king oficially outlawed them. Where exactly the Free Masons came into the picture I don't know.

it originally belonged to many people in the world but passed hands and grew bigger and bigger each time eventually the Knights of the Templar or the Free Masons found it and decided it was too big for any one man to posess so they hid it.
