Wow, did I really inspire your question?? lol They are considered cookies if whipped and baked and candy if boiled over the stove with sugar.

They are cookies. My favorite is coconut meringues dipped in milk chocolate. Yummy :)

I always thought of them as a 'dessert' generic-like; depends on if you eat them as is or fill with something. Without filling, could be a cookie.
