According to the Wikipedia link the shuttles have traveled approximately 446 million miles with 14 astronauts killed. That turns out to be 3 deaths per 100 million miles traveled.

According to the second link, there are 1.3 deaths per 100 million miles traveled for cars, and 31.3 deaths per 100 million miles traveled for motorcycles!

So statistically, it is more dangerous to ride on a motorcycle. There have been far more motorcycles rides than shuttle rides.

Personally, I would love to ride the shuttle, despite the potential problems. I think that people worry about the space travel because it is always being broadcast to us. If the news covered every motorcycle death, would the question be "Would you ever ride a motorcycle? Especially after the accidents we have seen?"

Yes, the chance of accident is only 1/100. They don't spend billion of dollars to kill someone in space. That would just shut down their budget or increase them politically.

Absolutely. Not only can this be justified (as the people before me did) but even if there was a high probability of being killed:

1: it would probably be a quick death
2: so what, it is worth it
