It's the herd mentality: if it's different, kill it.
Ignore them. I'm highly eccentric because I enjoy it.
Labels just mean the labellers are scared and/or have issues. People don't like what they don't understand and some think that by slapping a label on someone/group and pigeonholing them, they have the situation under control.
Ignore them and live.

Labelling seems only to be a major problem with the youth of today. There was a considerable amount of it when I was young myself but now has ceased to be a problem.

It's one of those things that if you let it affect you, it will. Think to yourself. Do you actually care about what people are lablelling you? Does it really matter or have any basis on anything in reality?

Then think of labels in another way. People want to describe someone the only way their minds will let them. So they take one of your traits and label you for it. Whether it's to identify you or to insult you it's not in any way important and probably won't go on very far into your twenties.

The fact is, people have better things to do than get upset about being called something they consider nasty.

Live life and enjoy it. Don't waste your time on this playground drivel. It's only for nutcases anyway. See labels as just that, a way of identification. If you're a man you get called "That man over there" yet you don't get offended because they think all you are is a man do you?

Look at it that way. You could be the bloke in the white shirt to me. But that's not offensive. So why should "That gothic looking fella over there" be any diferent?

As for the abusive. It's the same everywhere and not restricted to lablelling people. They call you anything to upset you, and responding is what they want. I'm sure you'd rather them call you a goth rather than a piece of sh!t. I know what I'd chose. Either way, it still matters little.

People only use labels when they are afraid of, or don't understand other people............sad but true!!! If your so called friends have dumped you because of the image you like then trust me you are better off without them. You must be 14 or 15 now being in year 10. Wait until people in your year mature a bit or until you go to college. As we get older we become more accepting of other people and your friends will realise how stupid they were!!!
Keep your chin up and be proud of who you are!!!

You're probabaly not a punk and I'm more than sure your friends aren't goths.

I despise certain social groups or "labels" but still have friends from these groups.

labeling is something that everyone says is so mean, but people cant help but to label others. im against labeling, but sometimes i find myself describing someone and calling them "prep" or "emo" or something like that. its cruel and unfair, but thats how the world is these days. people call me goth, punk, and emo, but others call me a prep. its not right but thats how it is.
