A midwife (today's version) is a type of nurse practitioner who has received extensive training in prenatal care, labor and delivery. The education they have is, at minimum, the equivalent of a master's degree and they are licensed. They usually deliver in hospitals and birthing centers but some will also do home delivery, where that is legal. They work under the supervision of an OB and would consult with that physician if needed (for example if a C-section is needed). The type of service they provide is individualized and patient oriented - lots more 1:1 than you'd get with a physician.
There are still unlicensed midwives practicing without supervision and many of them are experienced and very good at what they do, but to be certain you are working with someone who is qualified to care for you and your baby, be sure to check credentials.

a midwife also delievers at hospitals, i see a OBGYN that has 4 midwifes with him and i perfer to see my midwife even for annual physicals, she isnt much different however she could not do my sugery. She loves all natural ways of doing things but will do it differently if i prefer, they dont have as much schooling as an OB, but i love my midwife

a woman who is somewhat like a nurse that a soon-to-be mother hires to take deliver her baby. this is for people that dont want to go through the process of going to the hospital.

they can be in your home of a hospital. they do not have a doctors degree.
so in a hospital they can consult the doctor if there are problems
