I know a girl who worked there. She said it's not a big deal. If you do, great. If not they don't care.

It depends... Is the carhop just simply walking your food to your car -- or is she a nice looking gal who knows how to roller skate (even doing some simple tricks) when bringing your food out to your car?

I would say no tip at all if they WALK your food to your car.

HOWEVER,

If you are lucky enough to get a nice looking gal that is on traditional roller skates bring your food out, then a tip of at LEAST 15% is recommended, 20% if the service was excellent. If she is really good at roller skating and is showing off then even 25% or higher is recommended.

Now, does anybody know of a Sonic where the carhops are on roller skates????? I don't mind paying an extra 15-30% to see that at all.

Not sure why there is any doubt on this one. If you cannot wait patiently in the Sonic drive-thru, then you need to tip anyone that is willing to bring your lazy carcass a meal. It does not matter if it is fast-food or not. If you can sit in your car and have them bring it to you, how about throwing the car-hop a buck or 2.

I usually do. The amount depends on the change I get back. I usually give them the coins unless it is only a few cents and then I wont tip at all, had rather not tip than to insult them with .04 cents.

I can tell you you should always tip waiters and waitrouses, most of them don't get paid minimum wage, most get paid what is best refered to as waiting wages, which is a percentage of minimum wage and is based off of the expected earnings due to tips. As for how much it all depends on your personal oppionon on that matter, most people tip car hops 5-10% from what I've seen.

3 different times:

Drove up to drive thru window - no tip.

Waiting in line @ the drive thru, all i ordered was a slushy, but car ahead of me had a big order... girl comes out the door & delivers my drink to my car window. NICE!! - TIP!!

Ordered from the drive-up (where you park, order, wait, eat) - TIP!!

When in doubt, tip.
If you are spending money on a meal away from home, is a buck or 2 more really gonna hurt?

I don't. I know they get paid pretty well for a 'fast food' job and most of the time they are too rude to deserve a tip anyway.
