I just turned 40 and everything in the stores look like they were made for pre-teens. Is there a good fashion that won't make me look like I am raiding my daughter's closet? I don't want to look like a grandmother librarian either.

There are some generals to avoid. Tee-shirts with cuties little phrases written in metallic letters is definitely a teen thing, as is bolero sweaters. I'd say, avoid anything that is designed so that only anorexic supermodels can wear without showing any flaws. Those types of clothes tend to be targetted toward the only audience that can get away with it other than anorexic supermodels, and that audience is teenage girls. Anything that is fun, flirty, sexy and can disguise a flaw or two is perfectly acceptable.

My mother just turned 40 and she often asks me for fashion advice. The first thing you should do is find some stores that fit your age level. You CAN avoid dressing like a teen and still look glamorous! Here are some stores to help you:

Old Navy: A perfect in-between store! My mother and I can shop there together. I suggest checking out their jeans, dress pants, and accessories. www.oldnavy.com

New York & Co.: Very sophisticated! Their stuff is a bit expensive but you can get some wicked steals if you go at the right time. My mother and i both got some really nice dress pants for under $10. http://www.nyandcompany.com/nyco/

Nordstrom: If you're into designer clothes, check this place out. They also have really gorgeous dresses if you've got a formal event coming up. www.nordstrom.com

JcPenney: You have to kindof pick through it, but you can find some nice outfits. It's also one of the best places to go for jewelry.

Here are more tips:

- Please, PLEASE don't wear high waisted pants. Also, don't buy super low-rise jeans that teens wear. Most of the stores above have some that are in the middle. They should fall a little bit below your navel and are usually bootcut. These look good on almost eveyone.

- Don't buy shirts too tight or too loose. They should lightly flatter your curves and be of medium length.

- Ask your daughter what she thinks of your outfits. She will probably know what's in style and all.

-Here's my "ultimate casual outfit"! Anyone can wear this whether you're 8 or 88:
:your favorite jeans
:a t-shirt of your favorite fit
:a zip-up hoodie
:casual shoes or sneakers

Hope this helps you! Good luck!

Haha believe it or not, I am alot younger than you but feel the same exact way (no offense) lol I am in college but don’t like to appear my age because I’m very mature and Im a mother so I dress ''classy'' I wear blazers, jackets with the big belts on the outside, pointed toe hills. NO shirts with stupid sayings on them etc. You can actually shop at some of the same places that teens shop at but select your clothes wisely. I shop at Rue 21, Charlotte Russe etc. but I just by things that are classy like long flair shirts with simple patterns on them, nothing flashy, nothing glittery etc. I actually bought my mom a few shirts from Rue 21 from Christmas. She doesn’t dress like a teen she’s far from it but it wasn’t hard finding shirts there for her that also suited her style. They were very simple, yet still fashionable. You can actually shop anywhere if you know exactly what you want, you just have to know where to look and be creative. Good luck :)

For a professional sexy type, go for slacks, I have been seeing lots of women in my area flaunting slacks and pumps. If you are going for a mature look, laid back or so. Go for boot cut jeans, low rise if you feel comfortable.

It all depends on your body structure, some stores I would suggest to my mom, who is 44, would be Express, Gap, Macy's.

Try bold colors, teens sort of have that pre-look with bright colors, like neon green, and hot pink. Colors that aren't normally seen, like maroons and mauves are nice to go for. Then again, it all depends on what style you are going for.

I am in the same boat. I think hip looking jeans with heels along with a more expensive sweater can look fashionable without looking too young. I agree with the idea of a good leather coat.

suit jackets and stuff look really smart, and fitting skirts, try not using to much bright colours in your clothes, but just brightening it up with a fancy necklace or scarff, and some random shoes.

just think smart and elegant, or go on the show called 'not what to wear' , but im sure it won't come to that.

good luck xx

p.s also look at the film called 'freaky friday' and after the mother get her make over thing she looks awsome`!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Get a fashion magazine like Glamour or Cosmopolitan. They have up-to-date fashions in it. But just going by your avatar I'm sure you'd look good in about anything girl! Good luck!!!

I think turning 40 gives you the right to wear whatever you feel comfortable wearing and to heck with fashion.

Whatever your "style" is, it is your own. Please, get a life and stop worrying about whether your "style" conforms to the vagaries and wishes of those who only want to dictate what you may wear, hear, think, feel, do, etc, etc, etc. When you spend all your time and energy worrying about how well you conform to the wishes and dictates of "society", you have no time or energy left over to be yourself.
