Me and my husband are going through a sci-fi phase and I want to know what are some good sci-fi movies, old or new. We just watched Mission to Mars and liked it. If it has aliens, even better. And don't say Star Wars....I've also already seen Communion, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Starman, Fire in the Sky, E.T., Independence Day, War of the Worlds. Is there something special I haven't thought of?

Here are some of the basics in classic science fiction that are not only fun to watch, but full of ideas:
The Time Machine -1960 version
Forbidden Planet -1956
The Day the Earth Caught Fire -1962 -
THX1138 (pre-Star Wars George Lucas--real sci-fi, not space opera)-1978
Planet of the Apes (the original)-1968
Zardoz-1978 (uncompromisingly weird, but very provoking)
The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai-(modern pulp sci-fi, wacky,
wonderfully bizarre)

i'd go for Blade Runner, I-Robot (no aliens but pretty interesting), the Matrix series, the Alien series, see Dune (the new version split in three episodes) and Children of Dune (still in 3 episodes), Minority Report (ok Tom Cruise aside, it's still great), Pitch Black (cool, scary), 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Impostor (based on Philip K. Dick's book by the same name), Aeon Flux (although people scrunch their nose, it's still good), Dark City, THE DREAMCATCHER (based on Stephen King's book and need i say more), try some Japanese Anime (like Ghost in the Machine), Gattaca (about gene-selection), The Abyss (aliens underwater), the Sphere (some food for the brain) and anything based on sci-fi writers' books (for that matter, there are many nice stories that still ahven't found their way on screen, so don't hesitate to pick up any book by Isaac Asimov, Philip K. Dick or Arthur Clarke).

Serenity (but it won't have as much impact if you haven't seen the tv show Firefly)
The Alien quadrilogy (you could skip Alien 3 though)
Buckaroo Banzai
Dune (the original movie, not the sci fi channel miniseries)
2001 and 2010
Andromeda Strain
Blade Runner

If you like hot British men playing bad guys, watch "Star Trek Nemesis". If you like space travel films, "Red Planet". If you like ghost movies, "The Fog" from 2005, not the original.

Also "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" is funny. And the new series of "DOCTOR WHO" is freakin awesome!!! The creatures don't look very fake anymore and the actors (Chris Eccleston and David Tennant) are so wonderful!!!

Serenity/Firefly was great (Serenity was the movie, Firefly was the show) with fun action, fighting scenes.

Blade Runner is a classic that keeps you thinking about morals/human interference long after the movie is over.

5th Element is just revolutionary with the great acting, music, special effects and it is sooo quote-able!

Minority Report is another movie with great thinking points about how helpful technology is and how it can be abused.

Check out Serenity or the show Firefly, both really good, not your typical sci-fi either.
