There is an expiration date because, after a certain time, mold and fungi will grow on sour cream. Therefore, simply put, the expiration date lets you know when the time period for the sour cream can be used by.

Because sour cream is perishable, which means it gets rotten and unsafe to eat. If there was no expiration date, then people would be eating rotten nasty food and getting sick all the time. =)

Because it is dairy and goes bad after a short amount of time. But the date on the container is not the date it goes bad, it is a selling date. It's the last day that the retailer is allowed to sell it but it is still good afew days after that.
