Step 1 - Get an agent

Step 2 - Practice your acting skills
Full time drama schools teach performing arts to a professional level as well as academic subjects to GCSE. Part time drama schools offer classes in the evenings, weekends and holidays.

Step 3 - Get an audition for a show
Check your local paper and theatre regularly for any shows that might be coming up.

auditions for EastEnders are strictly by invitation only!

Step 4 - Get the part!
The most important thing to remember is that if you don't succeed at first, try and try again. It's an extremely competitive field and rejection comes with the territory.

Your best bet would be to join a drama group in your area. They will be able to put you in contact with agents and some are able to organise people to go allong as extras on TV shows inculding soaps. Usually you will have to show you can be trusted to go allong as an extra from a good drama group, as you'll be representing them. My group picked people based on attendance and reliability etc.

Eventually if you're deemed good enough your group might get news of auditions for such programmes like Eastenders. You will either be invited to an audition or it will be an open thing, where anyone may turn up.

Remember, they're not looking for film actors, but you will be expected to have some proficiency in acting. Even if this means being in some kind of group previously as I mentioned earlier.
