Depends on the screw-up. If it's software-related, a reinstall of Windows would be in your best interest if you do not know/understand the linux system. If it's hardware related (motherboard, memory, video card, etc), than it will remained screwed.

Yes. Pretty Much any version. However, you might have a bit of a dificult time with Drivers.
All the developers I know run Linux on their personal PCs, and they usually have to make some compromises in some cases.
But, it does work, in broad terms.

you can download the live DVD version or download the installation version from
below websites. or you can buy it from opensuse.org

you can download all the manuals from installing it to be a professional Linux user in pdf format

I have never found a more supported version of Linux than Novell suse

i use Mandrake linux on my VAIO.

But u could recover the laptop with the recovery CD that came with it when the laptop was purchased.
