I'm hispanic american 27 years old. I dont' have hispanic friends either, but how in the world can i have American friends?
I'm a quiet person and i don't think i would fit into their lifestyle cause most americns i have seen in my life are really talkative and get into gossip or deep conversations that i would not be able to handle. I speak slow and since my vocab is limited from being shy all my life, i think regular talkative americans would never accept me as an American.

It's a culture clash you are experiencing.

If you hang around people long enough without worrying about being accepted, you will gain another level of understanding and appreciation of Americans. Once you like the people you understand, you have accepted them... once you have accepted them, you've opened more doors for yourself.

Believe it or not, you have to risk not being accepted in order to find the good Americans who have a deeper understanding of who you are and can appreciate you. Believe me, there are non shallow people out there who will like you very much.

I'm half Spanish, my mother is a bilingual teacher, so I understand your question. In my heart, I truly believe you will be okay, because being an American who spoke English all of my life... I absolutely hate gossip. My world subsists of International freinds from all walks of life because of my attitude. I now run a global home business.

It took many, many years of self development growth to understand how to listen to people in a deeper level to get to where I could accomplish what I do now.

I have always been very shy. This issue in my life has kept me from so much. I have had enoough. I realized I was missing out on alot. I know some people are natural talkers, but you would be surprised how many people feel like you do. It's just that they go ahead and take a risk. I'm mexican-american and I think we all have something in common, no matter what nationallity. Now gossip is in all cultures, it all depends on the individual person. Maybe some assertive skills may help on how not to get involved in the spiderweb of gossip might help, (speaking to myself too). Believe me you're a regular american yourself. You as a person have a lot to offer others, don't keep all the goods to yourself. Share yourself with others. I wish you the best.

Of course you can have American friends. They are very nice. I am an Asian and they are so kind and nice to me. I do not fall into any of the gossip etc. I just hang around with them. They know that I do not understand many a things that they do. I ask them politely as to how to do it or whatever is new to me. They very courteously let me know...They do not make me feel out of place. You being silent or your limited vocabulory should not prevent you from mingling because conversation is 40 % words and 60% body language. If you have a good body language, you will get along with any group...believe me even if you do not understand what they speak.
My accent is different from theirs and sometimes we find it hard to understand each other's words, I always carry a note pad and write it for them, so that they know what I am talking about and vice versa. We just laugh at each other and get on with our lives. I enjoy it...so do they...they ask me to pronounce some stuff that they feel is very funny and I do it and all of us laugh. It is fun.. The whole thing is be open to laugh at yourself then it is easy to get along. After a while, you can laugh at them also they do not mind it either.

It appears you don't accept yourself so how can anyone else accept you? Just be comfortable with who you are and people will flock to you.
