Just take a multimeter and check the output voltage. Take the ground meter probe and put it on a ground or the negative battery terminal and put the red lead on the big wire lug on th eback of the alternator. Should be charging between 13 and 14.5 volts. May have to raise the rpms just off of idle to see it charge.

If your car has a computer DON'T just remove the positive battery cable. If it is working it could send a voltage spike and damage the computer. If you don't have on then it is ok to do so but a real tech would check it like the second guy said.

The easiest way to check your alternator is to remove your positive battery connection. If the car keeps running its more than likely good. If your car stalls out- you should get the alternator replaced.

is the negative.
