Dreams and nightmares are relatively the same thing, as they occur when we are asleep and we are not in a waking state. Dreams occur during REM stages and are pleasent, there is no real way of controlling a dream unless you are able to have lucid dreams and few are able to do this. Nightmares are obviously more intense and dreadful but really they are just the same as dreams, they are the mind exercising imagination and you have no real control over the images that may come to mind, freudian theories always try to label dreams as meaning something in your life, like we should interpret them and they actually mean something about your character, however this is untrue. Visions are different, because usually when one has a vision they are conscious and aware of what is going on, unless they are under the influence of drugs. Visions occur when we experience some sort of enlightenment, have a moment of clarity, or an epiphany about something. An example could be someone going through a very difficult time in their life and all of a sudden they have a feeling, or a vision of what they should do and suddenly everything makes sense and they could be overcome by emotion. This may come from some sort of deep thinking or some other brain activity where certain thought are simultaniously connected and come together but its very hard to tell. A vision implies something magical, other-worldly, unreal , mystical. Usually the recipient is awake experiencing a vision but there are visions that occur in the dream state as well. A vision is mental images experienced by the mind from an unknown source regarding matters important to that individual for the purpose of enlightenment or saving someone or something from catastrophic circumstances. The experiencer usually cannot identify the source of the vision but would be left in an awe-inspired state as though they were touched by some divine, heavenly entity. Non-believers would be believers after experiencing a vision. It is felt as an intervention from God or spirit. One knows it is far greater than anything ever felt before. It can be life-changing and unforgettable. Dreams are usually less dramatic in nature. They occur more often than visions, of course, as it is the nightly necessary pattern of our brains to dream. We don't know exactly why we have to dream but it is thought that our brains need to somehow clean house, so to speak, from the events that occurred during our day so as to start refreshed for the following day. Dreams are like the nightime gym program for the mind to work out any kinks or issues we may be having problems with. Dreams can provide answers or they just give us the opportunity to go through certain experiences from a different perspective. The brain is still active but under less pressure than in daytime mode. Hence the creative ideas or silly circumstances that can occur in dreams that seemingly don't make any sense. Dreams are the playground where our brains get free time to do as they wish without interference from our daily directions and demands. And nightmares are usually disturbing dreams reflecting a problem that so bothers us in our waking life that presents a challenge we cannot solve or understand. So in dreams we seek the answer and sometimes come up with a nightmare when no solution arises. A problem not solved can present as recurring nightmares. The brain is sending us messages through the nightmare scenario that we have issues that have gone into our subconscious mind that need to get out to relieve us from the nightmare itself. Our bodies have infinite knowledge about ourselves that we must pay attention to in order to live as healthy lives as possible. There are always clues and nightmares usually indicate unfinished business of some nature regarding our personal development.

Well, to me, to have/get a vision, you don't necessarily need to be asleep, and usually you get a vision of the future or it's predicting something. A dream, is just the process your brain goes through at night to sort through everything that happened the previous day. A nightmare is bascially the same thing except it's usually scary or disturbing and unpleasant in some way.

Yahoo is a nightmare tonight, broken up by dreams about these four lads from Liverpool... AND I must stop obsessing... She swims in shallow pools << Evoked the warm and fuzzies that did :-) A tiny, gorgeous little poem. Edit; Yeah, but that wasn't the effect she was going for, Mildred. It's a fast-paced, whirlwind dream/nightmare situation. Bogging it down with sensory examples would be detrimental to what the words and form contribute. The sentiment still shows, pretense would shroud it. And, for the record, I found it very enjoyable to read.

Visions = You can see them any given time, but not everyone pays attention to them.(can include dreams and/or nightmares).. they are suposed to tell you about an upcoming event.
Dreams = You can see them when you are sleeping or resting, people usually see what they wish, and we mostly forget what we saw afterwards.
Nightmares = They are horrifying dreams, and can be seen when you ate something bad or when you are in a bad position while sleeping, or you are thinking about something that is bothering you.

Visions: projections of what you want/aspire usually within the context of reason and done while substantially awake.

Dreams: projections of what you want/aspire but usually embedded with details that are too perfect to be true and done while suppressing a bit of the rational part of the brain.

Nightmares: projections of what you want/aspire coming true but with the accompanying details that you did not think through going all the way wrong.
